Comprised of newspaper article and poetry clippings, tickets, cards, and handwritten notes as well as concert programs and theater playbills mounted on first 74 pages of a 155 p. published volume "Compendium of passenger rates and divisions" used as a scrapbook. Includes ca. 30 clippings of articles from "The Rambler's Note-Book" from the Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser. Also includes ca. 140 poetry and review clippings from the Alexandria Gazette and Virginia Advertiser, Richmond Dispatch, The State, and other sources. The earliest poetry clipping "The Conquered Banner" dates from April 8, 1866. The latest clipping is from the Leesburg Washingtonian from April 2, 1911. Also includes 134 theater and concert playbills, in full or in part, dating from 1889 to 1895 from performances held at various Washington DC area venues including the Belasco Theatre, Washington D.C., The Alexandria Musical Association, Hill's Opera House, Allen's Grand Opera House, Albaugh's Grand Opera House, The Academy of Music, Sarepta Theatre, with the majority of playbills from the Alexandria Opera House, Alexandria, Virginia, and the New National Theatre, Washington, D.C. |
