Environmental engineering is an important branch of engineering. Rarely can one pick up the newspaper without reading an article concerning the environment; for example, an old hazardous waste dump site that has been discovered, a need for a new wastewater treatment plant in a growing city, the increasing frequency of air pollution problems caused by industry or motor vehicles, an accidental release of a toxic chemical, environmental impacts from a large construction project, ozone depletion, or global climate change. All engineering can benefit from additional education in the field of environmental engineering.
